Join me on a movie set..

Monday to Wednesday of this week consisted of a three day stint assisting Ana Cruzalegui with a couple of the other Academy of Makeup girls on the Kung Fu Movie Trailer! After a 5am rise for a 7.20 call time the first day, we got started on the actors, having come up with some character looks and ideas beforehand.  Getting to design my own stencils was a first, but an exciting opportunity all the same, and seeing them being used on the actors was a bit of a thrill :)

I won't lie to you; the work of a makeup artist isn't necessarily as glamorous as some people may think!  I'm pretty sure I was only a whisker away from losing my wee toes to frostbite day one, had to battle against the rain on the third day, and I felt truly terrible for the actors whos faces I had to touch doing their makeup just after going back indoors, as it would probably have been warmer to rub an ice cube on them! But that's all part of the job, (especially when you live and work here in Scotland!).  There's something new and different every day, which is definitely one of the appeals of the job.  We spent far more time indoors than outdoors over the course of the three days, so that's only a minor complaint! 

It was really interesting to experience the way filming something like this works.  Travelling from location to location, touching up the makeup and checking it constantly between takes, and working closely not only with the actors themselves but with the director, costume designer and the many other members of the crew who are so heavily involved in the process was great.  It's long hours, but very social, and you're constantly interacting with new people, which is great for building up confidence and contacts! Huge thanks to Ana for having us, another fantastic experience to add to the CV, and the best of luck to the film crew for what is sure to be a successful film project :)
